Currently, device therapy with implantable cardioverter-defibrillators is the only proven
effective therapy for sudden cardiac death. However, new insights into the mechanisms of
ventricular fibrillation, particularly the role of dynamic factors that cause wave instability, are
providing conceptual advances toward developing effective new pharmacotherapy.
